Against Newsweek Article Dec 15, 2008. Part I

Wow - how strong the delusion to those who oppose God's Word! It is not enough for them to just remain in their nature, but they must pervert the Bible to justify their existence in sin.

The opening words of the article, "The Religious Case for Gay Marriage" by Lisa Miller (page 28) reads, "Let's try for a minute to take the religious conservatives at their word and define marriage as the Bible does."

Who are the religious conservatives? And why would they be more important that God Himself who spoke the following words, "Fix these words of mine in your hearts..." and "...my word will never pass away..." The first error of Lisa Miller (which are many indeed) is that she relies on man and man's opinion more than God's. Her words are many against the Bible and reminds me also the truth found in Scripture, "When words are many, sin is not absent."

Her case of course is that marriage cannot be defined by the Bible. "Would any contemporary heterosexual married couple - who likely woke up on their wedding day harboring some optimistic and newfangled ideas about gender equality and romantic love - turn to the Bible as a how-to script? Of course not, yet the religious opponents of gay marriage would have it be so."

Well, Lisa... how is marriage going for the world today that denies the Bible's true words concerning marriage and accepts your words? Divorce rate above 50%... spousal abuse beyond that ever thought possible... adultery rampant... spousal murder at a rate that is unimaginable... need I go on? Seems to me the world has no answers to marriage that is positive or can help stop the pain in people's lives.

Miller's premise is that because Abraham, the great patriarch, slept with his servant (actually Sarah's servant - but Ms. Miller didn't read quite carefully enough) and so what can the Bible offer? Let's not forget Jacob who slept with four different women for his children... David, Solomon and the kings of Judah and Israel. Miller says the New Testament model of marriage is hardly better. (She then proceeds to bash Jesus and Paul simply because they were both single.)

The Bible is God's Word, speaking God's revelation to mankind. Men were moved by the Holy Spirit to record more than history - they recorded God's movement in mankind's history. In short, God's movement to reconcile man from his sinful ways... including those men listed above.

God's desire for marriage is simply this: "Genesis 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh." Because man perverted this truth does not change the truth nor does it dismiss God's will - we all will be held accountable to God.

Now, if God desired men to marry men or women to marry women - why would He have put Himself in such a box? If God blessed multiple wives for His patriarchs and kings - why would He have put Himself in such a box here? Man willed for himself to not be content with God's will and they were in sin and God in love stepped down from the throne and made Himself the sacrifice for our sins.

Jesus (being God in flesh) reiterated this truth of one man for one woman: Matthew 19:4-6 "Haven't you read," he replied, "that at the beginning the Creator 'made them male and female,' and said, 'For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'? So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

Notice the argument here by the naysayers of Jesus ... "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?" Notice secondly when the naysayers didn't like Jesus' answer they then asked, "Why then, did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?"

Jesus replied, Mt 19.8 "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard. But it was not this way from the beginning." [emphasis mine]

All who deny the Word of God have hardened hearts not able to accept the truth of God's word - because they would rather be who they want to be, not what God has desired and created us to be. They (like Miller here) look to the example of the men in the Bible and how they lived sinfully to justify their existence in sin. They also look to those who call themselves 'Christian' today that are not "perfectly following the Bible" and say such nonsense as, "See, the Bible is false!"

We are not to look to man... we are to look to Jesus Christ alone who became our sin on the cross and bore our sin so that our transgressions might be paid in full. He bore our iniquities and by His wounds we are healed.

In coming blogs I will continue to break down the arguments presented by Miller in this article. At the end, however, one chooses to believe based on their decision to take God's word for what it is and so yield to it... or, be content to live by their own self interest and self glorification. After all, who can say this was not written? Rev 22.12-15 "Behold, I am coming soon! My reward is with me, and I will give to everyone according to what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End. Blessed are those who wash their robes, that they may have the right to the tree of life and may go through the gates into the city. Outside are the dogs, those who practice magic arts, the sexually immoral, the murderers, the idolaters, and everyone who practices falsehood."

Do we practice falsehood by believing lies such as the Newsweek Cover Story instead of the Word of God? Do we practice falsehood like Miller who puts to print such lies for the masses to believe?

Ok, Pastor Fred I just read the blog. I agree that marrage is layed out in the Bible. But its the parents of Mrs Miller and the world that has twisted the truth about the Bible. Its Christians that quitely stand around and say nothing to articles like this. We should stand up and say what the truth og GOD says. We are scared that we are going to hurt someones feelings and are going to get sued. We need to stand on faith in GOD. If Muslims are willing to blow themselves up for there faith. We can speak up for are belief in GOD. Some Mrs. Miller, I hope you like others would take the time and read the wod for yourself. Not parts but the whole thing. Then you will know the Truth.
